Originally created as part of the Toyota Production System, Kanban is a visual inventory control system that facilitates just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing. It ensures a smooth flow of materials without overproduction or excess stock by using cards or signals to initiate replenishment only when inventory levels reach a predetermined threshold. Kanban facilitates better communication between production and supply chain stakeholders, decreases waste, and increases responsiveness to changes in demand. For real-time monitoring in contemporary supply chains, electronic Kanban systems interface with inventory management or ERP software.
